How I painted: Night Goblin Spear Shafts

A few people have asked me on various social media platforms how I painted the goblins. In particular the skin, spear shafts, rusty bits and shields. So for anyone interested (and for future me - who will no doubt have forgotten which paints were used) here is a quick step by step for the spear shafts.

The paints used are all acrylic paints by Vallejo. They are: 826 Cam Medium Brown, 921 English uniform, 988 khaki and 821 German Cam Beige.

The picture above shows a goblin in front of the paint that was used to achieve the colour for the spear shaft with that paint. The picture below show the spear shaft more clearly.

Step 1. Basecoat the entire spear shaft with Vallejo 826 Cam Medium Brown

Step 2. Using Vallejo 921 English Uniform paint lines down the spear shaft, allow a few thin lines of the previous colour to simulate wood grain. make sure the lines aren't straight up and down, make them a little wavy.

Step 3. Now paint over the lines you just painted with Vallejo 988 Khaki. Leave some of the previous colour showing at the edges. it doesn't matter that much if you go outside of the lines at this stage.

Step 4. Now do the same again. this time with Vallejo 821 German Cam Beige.

That's pretty much it. I did tint them with a little ink and I added some chipping as well, but I'll cover that in another post as I don't have any pictures to show at this time.

Until next time - stay frosty.

Night Goblins for Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

Lets get the ball rolling with some goblins that have been sat around in a box for a while... 21 years to be exact.

It was some time in late August of the year 2000, so just over 21 years ago as I write this, when these goblins and forty more like them were sprayed chaos black and then carefully packed into a box ready for a house move. They have sat waiting in that box for all these years and have been through five more house moves since that day in late August.

Each time we moved house I nearly sold them, but when I opened the box and peered inside, I remembered the dream of one day owning a fully painted orc and goblin army and I couldn't bring myself to part with them. So the box was closed and the goblins moved house with us to live in yet another dark and dusty loft.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, after reading through various posts on various blogs, forums, Warhammer Fantasy Battle Facebook groups and watching WFB and Oathmark related YouTube content, I felt inspired and retrieved the box out of the loft.

So after 21 years these goblins are finally getting some paint on them.

This blog has been created so I can waffle on about my love of painting miniatures and making terrain for the various armies and projects I have started over the last few years, well decades really. But who's counting?

As mentioned above, over the past few decades, four decades to be precise, a healthy collection of miniatures have been accumulated for the many and varied games I am interested in. Like some kind of miniatures obsessed dragon, I have gleefully added more and more miniatures to my treasure pile of lead, pewter, plastic, and resin. More than anyone could hope to paint in two lifetimes, if I'm honest. Never the less, and ever the optimist, I'm determined to give painting them all a damn good go!

Many of the painted miniatures you will see and read about on this blog will be joining the ranks of my own armies. However, some are destined to be sold to further the purchase of more glorious miniatures for my ever expanding horde.

See you on the flip side :)
